Leipzig / Halle Airport: Freight volume continues to grow in double digits
The freight volume at Leipzig / Halle Airport (LEJ) continues to grow in double digits. In October, the LEJ, Europe's fifth largest cargo airport, recorded a new high in air freight volume. Compared to the same month last year, freight throughput increased by 10.9 percent to 124,881 tons.
The number of flights in freight traffic rose by 8.7 percent to 4,501 compared to October of the previous year.
In the first ten months of the year, the air freight volume increased by 8.4 percent to over 1.11 million tons. Air freight throughput at the LEJ continues to grow disproportionately and contrary to the nationwide negative trend.
LEJ: Amazon Air
At the beginning of November, Amazon Air opened its first regional air freight center in Europe at the LEJ. The company uses a newly built 20,000 square meter cargo facility with direct access to the apron.
LEJ: Prepared for vaccine transhipment
The LEJ offers its customers CEIV Pharma certification. The airport is able to handle temperature- and time-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments such as vaccines around the clock. PortGround GmbH is responsible for this. It belongs to Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG and specializes in aircraft and cargo handling. The airport's cold store is located in the World Cargo Center (WCC). This has direct access to the apron. This ensures short transport routes and stable cold chains from and to the aircraft and truck.
LEJ: DHL hub
DHL Express operates its largest hub worldwide at the LEJ. Up to 2,000 tons are handled here every day. LEJ is also the home airport of AeroLogic, a joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo.
This year the airport initiated a plan change procedure with a volume of around 300 million euros. In August, the airport submitted the documents required for this to the responsible planning authority, the State Office of Saxony. The focus is on enlarging the apron areas in the area of ??the DHL hub in order to create additional parking positions for aircraft.
LEJ: Cargo-friendly Airport
With up to 1,000 freight flights a week, the Leipzig / Halle air freight hub guarantees reliable logistics and supply chains for the flow of goods within Europe and worldwide. The airport also offers multimodal transport links. LEJ is directly connected to the trans-European motorway and rail network in both north-south and east-west directions. Among other things, this enables 15 European countries to be reached by truck in eight hours from the LEJ.
The airport maps the entire product portfolio along the supply chain 24/7 for freight forwarders, charter brokers and airlines. All types of air freight and cargo aircraft can be handled at the LEJ - around the clock, 365 days a year. In addition to general and outsize cargo, this also includes pharmaceutical and e-commerce consignments as well as large living animals and the transport of dangerous goods.
A total of around 60 freight airlines head for the airport and serve a route network that includes over 280 destinations worldwide. In 2019, the freight volume at Leipzig / Halle Airport was around 1.24 million tons.
