FedEx Express starts up new sorter at Stuttgart Air Gateway
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp and the world’s largest express transportation company, has expanded its Stuttgart Air Gateway and commissioned a new sorter at the site.
The new set-up significantly improves handling speed and capacity, making it well equipped to meet export and import demand from customers in the region. In addition to more than tripling sorting capacity, it offers an almost fivefold increase in capacity for X-raying airfreight shipments. The warehouse, which has been expanded from 800 square meters to 3,000 square meters, also enables better handling of freight and dangerous goods.
Stuttgart Air Gateway is currently connected to the FedEx main European hub, Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, with four outbound and four inbound flights a week. This route is flown with a B737 jet. An ATR 72 turboprop will be used on another route between Stuttgart and Liège. The new set-up will also create 30 new jobs at Stuttgart Airport. So far, 15 employees have worked at the site.
“The expansion is further evidence of our growth strategy in Europe. We have invested to offer our customers in the region even more service and opportunities. FedEx Express is a strong partner and supports large, medium-sized and smaller companies to grow their business,” says Stefan Dries, Vice President Ground Operations Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Matthias Barbian, Managing Director Ramp & Gateways Operations, adds: “The Air Gateway Stuttgart offers our team members and service providers a modern working environment. The location is in an economically strong region and connects the companies based here to international markets worldwide via the FedEx Express air network.”
The region around Stuttgart is one of Europe’s leading high-tech hubs. Many large, world-renowned companies and successful small and medium-sized enterprises have their headquarters here. The region is a leader in the fields of automotive electronics, information technology and mechanical engineering. 1
The expansion of the air gateway is the second major investment by FedEx Express in the Stuttgart region within a year. In early summer 2022, the company had opened a new location in Nufringen. This location offers improved express services through later pick-up times and also significantly expanded capacities.
The Stuttgart Air Gateway, which has been in operation since September 2012, is one of seven FedEx air cargo locations in Germany. FedEx’s largest air cargo location in Germany is the Air Hub in Cologne, which employs over 900 people.
