DB Schenker delivers transformers from St. Petersburg to Novosibirsk
DB Schenker Logistics in Russia recently successfully fulfilled an order from the ABB Group for the delivery of four power transformers from the port of St. Petersburg to the grounds of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Station, a branch of OAO RusHydro.
The cargo, with a total weight amounting to more than 280 tons, was transported partially dismantled. ZAOSchenker won the bid for transportation by offering optimal service value with minimal delivery time. Within a short period, the set of documents was gathered for customs clearance and a railroad transport of four heavy-weight pieces - weighing over 60 tons each - was made ready. For the following transportation by road a site was chosen for transfer from railroad to trucks, a subsequent itinerary was planned out and the necessary approvals was obtained from the authorities.
The choice of railway rolling stock and the design of an original method for securing the cargo on it was particularly difficult, noted Pavel Zharov, Head of the Special Project Department for ZAO Schenker. The dimensions, the weight, the configuration of the supporting surface, the transformers' high and shifted center of gravity - all of these factors did not allow the application of traditional methods for placing and securing cargo, even in case of use of special-purpose railroad wagons. Nevertheless, an intricate design solution was found and agreed upon with the Russian Railways. This permitted the use of multi-purpose platforms and, at the same time, allowed not to exceed the low degree of limits for oversized loads.
As a result of the close cooperation between employees of the Customs Clearance Department, the Special Projects Department of the St. Petersburg Branch and the contractors, the cargo was delivered to the grounds of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Station less than 20 days from the moment it arrived at the port, traversing a distance of around 4,000 kilometers. The services includes Customs clearance in the port under a single customs commodity code, delivery of the accessories by road from the port directly to the grounds of a Hydroelectric Power Station, the transport of the heavy-weight items to Novosibirsk by railroad, the transshipment of the heavy-weight items to automobile special trailer for road transport, and the local delivery to the grounds of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Station.
